The foreign painters of the Etaples art colony constitute a remarkable part of the historical collection of the Musée du Touquet-Paris-Plage. Through more than 70 works of art from its collections, but also from public institutions and private individuals, “Lumière d’Opale” will introduce the public to foreign painters, pioneers in the region. For this exhibition, the town of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is joining the promotion programme of the painters of the Opal Coast initiated by the Department of Pas-de-Calais.

At the end of the 19th century, the construction of the first railway lines, the great Parisian works and the high cost of living drove some painters to leave the capital. In search of nature and authenticity, they found new sources of inspiration in other regions. These migrations gave rise to real pictorial currents, such as the famous Pont-Aven school in Brittany. On the Channel coast, the Etaples art colony, which was built around the emblematic figures of Le Sidaner and Chigot, appeared to be the most important. In a few years, artists from all over the world met there: the English Lee Hankey, Hodge, Hughes-Stanton…, the Australians Bunny, Rae, Quinn, Rix-Nicholas…, the Americans Bohm, Couse, Hayes, Koopman…, or the Norwegian Thaulow. Together they made up a cosmopolitan and dense group with more than 200 artists listed! They discovered new subjects that they sketched from life: the long beaches and sand dunes, the fishing port activities of Etaples, the rural landscapes of the hinterland. Low cost of living and the Salon de la Société des Amis des Arts [Society of friends of the arts] which took place in Etaples, and from 1896 onwards in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, provided painters with favourable living and working conditions. It is this exceptional artistic adventure of the years 1880-1920, known all over the world, which is presented to you in the “Lumière d’Opale” exhibition.
